I did not support the initial $1 billion Cash for Clunkers program or its recent $2 billion expansion for several reasons.
It is my belief that the program offered the too generous rebate of up to $4,500 in the first place. It is almost unprecedented for the government to underwrite that high of a percentage of a private sector product, even considering the new homeowner’s break of $8,000 on a much higher purchase was offered recently by the government.
Expanding the program with another $2 billion also did not have my support. It is my belief that fewer dollars could have provided a similar boost to the industry and taken as many gas guzzlers off of the road.
