Rep. Mica hosted a tele-townhall meeting focusing on health care reform legislation Tuesday.  The meeting lasted over 2 1/2 hours and covered a wide range of issues dealing with health care reform proposals before Congress. Congress passed the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act which, authorizes approximately $10 billion for the Coast Guard for fiscal year 2010 and makes several amendments to laws regarding Coast Guard authorities and shipping.

Congressman Mica participated in a Subcommitte on Economic Development Hearing entitled Looking Out for the Very Young, the Elderly and Others with Special Needs: Lessons from Katrina and other Major Disasters.

Congressman Mica met with Osceola County Commissioners John Quinones and Michael Harford regarding Osceola County's role in Cental Florida transportation isssues.

Accompanied by his wife Pat, Rep. Mica attended the Family of Friends 20th Anniversary and Silent Auction.  Family of Friends is an assisted living facility in Sanford, FL that specializes in the care of the mentaly disabled.

U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-7th District, FL) is sponsoring three Small Business Forums conveniently located throughout the Seventh Congressional District on Monday, October 19, 2009.  The Heathrow seminar is scheduled from 8 to 10 a.m., the Daytona event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the St. Augustine round table is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.  Ample free parking is available at all three locations.

Rep. Mica spoke to the Delta Academy at the Orlando-Sanford International Airport regarding pilot training programs and the anticipated high demand for pilots in the future.

At the Air Force Association’s Annual Congressional breakfast, Rep. Mica joined hundreds of members of our nation’s Air Force. 
 
Congressman Mica hosted a reception on Friday, September, 11th and greeted hundreds of Central and Northeast Floridians who, at their own time and expense, visited our nation’s Capital to express their disapproval of the federal government and the Obama Administration’s unsustainable contributions to the deficit.  With a crowd of constituents who gathered in the Rayburn House Office Building, Rep. Mica lead the group to the steps of the Capitol building where he unfurled two scrolls signed by thousands of Floridians and Americans in protest of current government policies. (Photo) (Video)

Rep. Mica and other Members of Congress participated in a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony on the Capitol steps.  Those that tragically lost their lives eight years ago were remembered  along with the countless others who have sacrificed for our nation.

August

On Monday, August 24th, Congressman Mica conducted one of the largest town hall meetings by telephone conference call in Florida and possibly the country.  21,864 constituents of the 7th Congressional District were called and 3,007 households participated in the forum.  The 846 constituents who signed up for the town hall meeting were included in the total.
 
Calls were made to all six counties and nearly every community in the 7th Congressional District.  Constituents received advance notice by telephone from Congressman Mica the preceding Thursday evening.
 
Every participant had the opportunity to submit a question and 114 questions were asked.  The topics discussed included health care, the federal deficit, taxes and other issues important to voters.  While Congressman Mica answered many questions during the two hour and forty-five minute call, those unable to have their question answered during the conference were afforded the opportunity to leave a message and will receive a written response from the Congressman.

Other Recent Activities:

Congressman Mica addressed a large gathering of the Volusia Manufacturers Association.  During his remarks, Mr. Mica discussed health care, the economy and ways to improve our nation’s competitive advantage.

Rep. Mica addressed the Rotary Club of Sanford during their weekly meeting. Congressman Mica spoke on current issues such as health care reform and other local initiatives.

Rep. Mica, the Republican Leader on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, gave the keynote address at the 12th Annual Transportation & Infrastructure Luncheon in Irving, Texas. In his speech entitled “Confusion Reigns for Nation’s Transportation & Stimulus Projects”, the Congressman touched on the failure of the stimulus to create the jobs promised by the Administration, priorities for reauthorizing the federal surface transportation law set to expire next month, the need to replace the increasingly obsolete federal gasoline tax as the primary source of revenue for the Highway Trust Fund and burdensome delays and red tape in the transportation project approval process.

Congressman Mica addressed the state-wide conference of the Florida Transportation Builders Association in Broward County, Florida.  In his speech, he touched on the reauthorizing the federal surface transportation law which funds transportation and infrastructure projects nationwide for the next six years, the future of the federal gasoline tax, the primary source of revenue for the Highway Trust Fund, delays and red tape in the transportation project approval process and the failure of the stimulus to create the jobs promised by the Administration.

Putnam County Chairwoman Nancy Harris, Palatka Mayor Karl Flagg, Putnam Chamber of Commerce President Wes Larson and other representatives from Putnam County met with Congressman Mica regarding economic development in the city of Palatka and Putnam County and the placement of a new Veterans Administration Clinic in the community

Rep. Mica, with representatives from Flagler County and the Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation, toured the new Vince Carter Sanctuary chemical dependence treatment center.  The Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation is scheduled to receive another $700,000 through 2010 federal appropriations to assist in their mission of addiction treatment.

Congressman Mica visited the Daytona Arts and Sciences Museum to examine storm damage from the May 2009 flooding.  He is working with members of the museum board and other officers to assist in securing federal emergency management support for the rebuilding of the more than 20,000 square foot facility inundated by recent storms.

Congressman Mica met officers of the Boys and Girls Club, Mayor Bob Apgar and community leaders to discuss plans for creating a new youth club facility in the Spring Hill area of DeLand.  In the past, Mica has helped raise private sector funds for the effort, secured $50,000 in federal funds and is currently on track to aid the project with an additional $250,000 included in the House passed 2010 appropriations bill being considered by the Senate.

Rep. Mica met conferred with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and other community leaders to resolve pending issues on the Central Florida SunRail project.  Reps. Mica and Brown have also helped secure an extension of the CSX contract and are working to secure additional federal support and to renegotiate more favorable terms of the previous agreement.

Rep. Mica visited a number of city hall meetings during August, including meetings in Welaka, Pomona Park and Pierson, to meet with local officials and address citizen concerns.  Congressman Mica has also make presentations to various organizations including the St. Augustine Kiwanis Club, the Sanford Rotary, and the Central Florida Kiwanis Club.

Congressman Mica participated in a Postal Service and District of Columbia Subcommittee hearing regarding the Washington, DC Metro Rail accident and continual funding challenges.

Rep. Mica unscrolled a list of more than 4,000 signatures, nearly 80 ft. in length on the steps of the Capitol. The signatures were from those who participated in the Orlando Tea Party.

Congressman Mica offered an ammendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill, that would have expedited payment dispersal of crop program relief funds to growers in the district who suffered losses during the floods this past May.

Rep. Mica met with the Undersecretary of the USDA, Jim Miller, to discuss crop damage caused by the floods in May and expediting relief to effected growers.

Joined by former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert and other Members of Congress, Rep. Mica participated in a Press Conference regarding the reestablishment of the House Drug Task Force in response to the Administration's recent policy changes.

June

Congressman Mica observed the "Field Day" training mock-up in Seminole County. The training is designed to demonstrate how radio operators would conduct their operations during emergencies such as a hurricane.

Rep. Mica participated in the commencement of a new van service for the veterans of Sanford and north Seminole County. Representatives from Seminole County veterans’ organizations and LYNX joined Congressman Mica, Mayor Linda Kuhn and Seminole County Commissioner Brenda Carey in kicking off this new service for veterans seeking medical care at the facility located at 2583 South Volusia Avenue, Orange City.

Congressman Mica met with local leaders to discuss the proposed visitors center at the Castillo de San Marcos and the upcoming 450th anniversary celebration for the city of St. Augustine.

Rep. Mica attended the opening ceremony for the Palm Coast Carribean Festival.

Congressman Mica met with Peter Appel, who was confirmed as the new Administrator for the Research and Innovative Technology Administration for the Department of Transportation.

Rep. Mica met with Florida Department of Transportation Secretary, Stephanie Kopelousos regarding transit projects in the state and the future of SunRail.

Rep. Mica attended the dedication of the statue of President Reagan in the Capitol.

Congressman Mica spoke to the Intelligent Transportation Systems America at their annual meeting in Washington DC about his goals for the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and technology implementation into the transportation industry.

Rep. Mica attended a briefing in New Orleans from FEMA regarding the area's recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

While considering a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) bill, the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to an amendment by Rep. Mica and others to streamline and improve their rulemaking process at TSA.” This Amendment will help improve safety for the traveling public.

May

Accompanied by State and Local Officials, Rep. Mica visited areas effected by the heavy rains and flooding. Rep. Mica also sent letters to the President, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and Gov. Crist, urging expedited federal and state assistance.

Rep. Mica met with Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp to discuss the recent storm damage caused by the heavy rains and hurricane preparedness.

Congressman Mica participated in Memorial Day events throughout the District, including remembrance ceremonies in Palm Coast, Bunnell and Sanford.

Congressman Mica met with the Rails to Trails Conservancy group to discuss active transportation programs in the 7th District and throughout the nation.

Congressman Mica attended our nation’s 56th Presidential Inauguration.  While many constituents were in town for the festivities, the Congressman had the opportunity of hosting a reception at the U.S. Capitol for Floridians and met with several local officials, including Volusia County Chairman Frank Bruno, Palatka Mayor Karl Flagg and Bethune-Cookman University President Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed.
